Jyotish

Jyotish is a very old astrological system originating in India thousands of years ago which intricately connects the movement of the solar system with human nature and our various activities on this planet. It is said to have been perceived by enlightened scholars called rishis and passed down through the generations as an oral tradition.  Jyotish is still practiced widely throughout India today.

Jyotish means “the light” or “the study of light” and is designed to illuminate our way along the path our lives follow. Jyotish reveals our predispositions and psychological wiring, giving awareness to our behaviours and motivations. It indicates the areas of life where we have strength and confidence as well as the parts that we are less certain about. Jyotish tells how our past actions (karmas) have positioned us right now and what we might expect to occur or exert influence in our lives in the future.

Jyotish is referred to in the west as Vedic astrology. The word Vedic comes from the word Veda which means sacred knowledge. Within the large volumes of ancient scriptures known as the Vedas,  Jyotish is referred to as the Eye of the Vedas as it functions to perceive the order of events that unfold over the course of a person’s lifetime.

The Law of Karma

Vedic astrology has its basis in Vedic philosophy and therefore in the law of karma. The natal chart identifies the type of karma (action) that is due to us and indicates when during our lives certain karmas are to be expected. In many cases karma can be offset and Vedic astrology acts to identify future karma by creating awareness and using remedial measures where appropriate.

East & West

The ecliptic is the plane on which the planets transit around the sun. The stars in the background of the ecliptic form the zodiac. The zodiac is divided into twelve equal parts, which are the signs of the zodiac.

In Vedic astrology your zodiac sign or sun sign can differ from your western sun sign and this can cause confusion. The reason is this. Western astrologers use the Tropical Zodiac, which aligns with the symbology of our earthly seasons. In this system the vernal equinox always lines up with the beginning of Aries on March 21st each year. Astronomically speaking, however, the Sun’s entry into the constellation of Aries has changed over many thousands of years due to an astronomical phenomenon known as the progression of the equinoxes. The Sun now actually enters the constellation of Aries on April 14 of each year. Vedic astrology uses the Sidereal Zodiac, which is based on the positions of the constellations rather than the timing of the seasons. As a result, there is about a 23-degree difference between the two zodiacs known as the ayanamsha.

So, if you are a Leo in western astrology, you may find that the sun’s actual position in the sky at the time of your birth was in the previous constellation of Cancer.

I hold qualifications in Western and Vedic astrology. In 2003 I completed Certificate 3 in Professional Astrology from the Australasian Academy of Astrology and Allied Arts, a qualification that is recognised within the Australian Qualifications Framework (National Provider 40002).

About the Reading

There are a number of different branches within Vedic astrology. I focus on the psychological interpretation of the natal chart. The natal chart shows the placement of the planets in constellations (nakshatras), zodiac signs and houses at the time of birth. Our chart is a unique reflection of our personality and illuminates the way we interact with the world around us, our creative and professional potential and our family life and early conditioning . The chart brings to light our fundamental motivations and attachments.
